Our problem is that soldiers are dying in Afghanistan and their families are left behind and are sad.  I bet you didn't know that 5,415 soldiers have died in Afghanistan.  What we want to do is go to every classroom and do a presentation and tell them about it.  We are going to find unit addresses of the U.S soldiers that have died in the last 6 months and assign a soldier to each class and have the classes write letters to the soldiers in their unit.  We'll ask the people in the unit to send it to their families and they will get it.  We are going to ask the families to write back and we can bring the letter back to their class and they will know that they have done something good to the soldiers.  If the families write back then we may present their letters at exhibition.  For that we are having 4th and 3rd grades do it.  For kinder, 1st ,and 2nd grades we are doing a project with the DeBakey VA Medical Center.  We are doing the OEF/OIF program to help the returning veterans feel welcomed back.  We'll have them draw pictures about how we are very happy to have them back and we'll have them write a class letter thanking them for their service.  We will be sending those pictures and letters to the hospital.  We will also be asking for donations to give to the hospital as well.  We will be collecting travel size shampoos, conditioners, etc., reading or stationary iteams, socks, hats, gently used clothes, puzzles, new or gently used boardgames, and playing cards.  If you have any questions go to Mrs.Hernandez's 5th grade classroom and ask for Logan, Matthew, Sai, or Bridget.                                                   Our Opinions On War  
                Logan: "I think that WAR is BAD and that we shouldn't have it." 
                                  
                                  Matthew: "I think WAR is a WASTE of lives and there is no use for it.  WAR is very bad."

                                  Sai: "I think WAR makes it even WORSE and it just makes them  more angry and doesn't put any PEACE in between the two forces

                                  Bridget: "I think that WAR is something that JUST HAPPENED and it just can't be stopped because of this or that.  Sometimes WAR just seems like a CLOUD OF DARKNESS hovering over all of the world."
